Korean Paprika Gets Access to the Australian Market

Australia has opened the way for Korea to send fresh greenhouse-grown paprika fruit to Australia, under quarantine conditions.

Australia’s Ambassador to Korea, Sam Gerovich, welcomed the decision saying that he was confident that all Australians would enjoy fresh and tasty Korean paprika fruit as much as he did.

Mr Gerovich said that the Korea Australia agricultural relationship was complementary, with most of our horticulture production being counter seasonal. He said that expanding agriculture exports between our two countries was important to both governments; it provided opportunities for Korean producers and importers and ultimately would benefit Korean consumers.

Access for paprika to Australia was Korea’s top priority horticulture market access and comes following the finalisation of an import risk assessment.

Korea’s paprika production is a growing industry. More than 40 per cent of Korea’s paprika production is exported. Over 90 per cent of Korea’s total paprika exports are to Japan with a small percentage exported to Canada and Taiwan. From 2000 to 2007 Korea’s paprika cultivation area increased threefold to 343 hectares.
