Assessment Level 1 & 2
Assessment Level 1 (AL1) applicants are advised to apply online through the Internet at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website. Koreans applying for Student visa subclass 574(Postgraduate Research) and 571(School Sector) are AL1 applicants. If you apply online, you may check the progress of your online application or make enquiries through the Internet.
Note: Student Guardian visa appplications cannot be applied for online. Therefore, students and their guardians applying for a School Sector Student visa and a Student Guardian visa at the same time are encouraged to apply through the Visa Office of the Australian Embassy Seoul because there may be delays if they are lodged separately. The requirements checklist for AL1 student visa applcants are the same as AL2 student visa applicants except for the evidence of financial capacity requirement. AL1 student visa applicants are not required to show evidence of financial capacity.

Assessment Level 2 (AL2) applicants must apply for their initial student visa application through an Australian Visa Office overseas. For Korean nationals, AL2 student visas include subclasses 570(ELICOS), 572(VET), 573(Higher Education), 575(Non Award) and 576(AusAid or Defence). The average processing time for AL2 and AL1 student visa applications lodged at the Visa Office Australian Embassy Seoul is 10 working days. If an applicant is requested to provide additional information/documents, attend an interview or undergo further medicals, the processing time may take longer.
Requirement checklist for AL2 Student visa applicants:
- Form 157A, Application for a student (temporary) visa
- If an agent or authorised recipient is appointed, Form 956, Appointment of a migration agent or exempt agent or other authorised recipient
- A valid passport
- Visa application charge
- Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
- Evidence of financial capacity issued within 1 week prior to the application* (eg. Deposit Balance Certificate)
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) arrangement evidence** (not required if noted in CoE)
- Completed health examination at designated panel hospital
- If the applicant is under 18:
- Family Relation Certificate and Identification Certificate
- Passport copies of the applicant's parents
- Document(s) of welfare arrangements in Australia***
- If the applicant's parents are divorced, the following must be provided:
- a notarised consent letter from the non-custodial parent
- a certified copy of the non-custodial parent's ID
- contact number of the non-custodial parent
- If the applicant is married:
- Family Relation Certificate
- If the applicant has dependent family members applying with him/her:
- Family Relation Certificate
- Evidence of adequate arrangement of school aged dependent's education in Australia (school age: between 5 to 14.9 years old)
- A notarised consent letter from the non-accompanying parent
- If a student dependent is applying independently as the main applicant, Form 919, Student dependant nomination, copy of the Student visa holder’s passport and visa with evidence of enrolment must be provided. Also, OSHC family coverage arrangement needs to be confirmed and CoE is not required.
* Information on financial requirements can be found at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website. If the applicant is financially supported by a family member and not the applicant, a Family Relation Certificate (or Resident Register) and a letter form the person providing the financial support are required.

** OSHC must be provided for a period of at least 12 months unless the applicant is undertaking a course(s) of less than 12 months. If the period of visa granted is less than 12 months the OSHC coverage should be for the period of the visa. If family members are included in the application, OSHC arrangements for the whole family must be provided.
*** There are three types of welfare arrangements for applicants under 18 and they are as follows:
1. If a parent is accompanying the applicant, the parent must be granted a Student Guardian visa.
2. If a relative in Australia will be looking after the applicant's welfare, they must be over 21 years old and an Australian citizen or a visa holder with visa period longer than the applicant's intended study period. This relative must provide,
- Form 157N, Nomination of a student guardian
- Form 80, Personal particulars for character assessment
- passport and visa copies
- penal clearance from all the countries he/she has resided for more than 12 months in the past 10 years after the age of 16
- Family Relation Certificate showing the relationship of the relative with the applicant

3. If none of the above, you must provide Student Welfare Letter from the applicant's education provider
Please note:
- All documents not in English must be translated by a certified translator
- All documents included in the application must be original documents or certified copies of the original documents
- Applicant must be 6 years old or over at time of application.
