Australia and Mongolia launch new scholarships program

Australian Ambassador to Mongolia, His Excellency Mr Peter Rowe, and the State Secretary of the Mongolian Ministry of Finance, Mr Davaakhuu Battur, yesterday launched the Mongolia Australian Scholarships Program (MASP).

The scholarships, funded through the Australian Government’s international aid agency, AusAID, aim to foster leadership, build partnerships and strengthen linkages.

Over the next three years AusAID will award approximately 80 Masters degree scholarships to Mongolians to study in Australia.

AusAID will provide about AUD$9 million to fund the scholarships which will help build priority sectors including agriculture, energy and mining. Individuals from NGOs, universities and private companies will also be eligible to apply in priority fields of study.

“Australian Scholarships for Mongolians have been an enduring feature of our bilateral relationship and are highly regarded across the world,” Mr Rowe said.

“I am pleased to see that the new program has also opened up to Mongolian private companies, NGOs and universities and I wish the program every success in the coming years.”

Mr Rowe said Mongolian scholars who return from Australia play an active and important role in providing ongoing social and networking support for future scholars.

To support the continued development of the Mongolia-Australia Alumni Association and its excellent work, the international arm of the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, Australian Education International (AEI), has contributed AUD$10,000 to strengthen its activities.

Australian Scholarships have been a feature of the Australia-Mongolia bilateral relationship since 1992.
